Disturbing Details Revealed About Colt Gray In Newly Released Court Docs

Prosecutors are investigating Colt Gray’s visits to gun ranges as they build their case against the alleged Apalachee High School mass shooter.
Gray, 14, is accused of opening fire on September 4 at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing four and injuring nine others. He is facing 55 charges: four counts of murder, four counts of felony murder, four counts of aggravated battery, 25 counts of aggravated assault and 18 counts of cruelty to children in the first degree.
His father, Colin Gray, was also arrested in connection with the deadly shooting. Colin Gray is facing 29 charges, including second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. Prosecutors have alleged that Colin Gray purchased the firearm used in the shooting as a Christmas gift.
Court documents filed on Tuesday revealed that subpoenas have been issued to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Amazon.
Prosecutors asked the DNR for records relating to Colt’s visits to Big Lazer Creek Shooting Range in Talbot County, Clybel Shooting Range in Mansfield and Wilson Shoals Shooting Range in Banks County.
The subpoenas, which were served in September, request “sign-in sheets, copies of license information, payment information, surveillance footage, and other records” between the start of the year and the day of the shooting.
Amazon was also served a subpoena for customer information, payment information and purchase history. Prosecutors are mainly focused on information pertaining to an address in Jefferson and an address in Bethlehem, where Colt Gray was reportedly living over the past year.
Colt and Colin Gray are both expected to be arraigned on November 21. The father and son were indicted last month. District Attorney of the Piedmont Judicial Circuit Brad Smith announced the charges.
“This is a case with the most victims in any criminal case in the county,” Smith said.
He also acknowledged how all students and the community were impacted by the incident.
“We hope this can start the process of healing for the community. The charged victims are the ones the crime was directed towards, but every person in that school was a victim,” Smith said.
The judge who was presiding over the case, Judge Currie M. Mingledorff II, recused himself from the case. In his recusal, he cited his pending retirement and the need for a smooth transition. The case was reassigned to Judge Sarah Griffie.
In May 2023, the FBI spoke to Colin and Colt Gray after tips that Colt allegedly made Discord threats to shoot up a middle school. In a police report obtained by Newsweek, Colin Gray stated his son had problems at West Jackson Middle School in Hoschton, Georgia, and was going to Jefferson Middle School about 17 minutes away, where things got better.
Colin Gray said he had hunting rifles in the home but he was not allowed to use them unsupervised. Officials also spoke to Colt, who appeared “calm and reserved.” The then 13-year-old claimed he used to have a Discord account but deleted it before moving in with his dad because it kept getting hacked. Discord is a platform for hosting real-time text, video, and voice chat, often used by gamers and streamers.
Colt Gray claimed someone accused him of threatening to shoot up a school, but he would never say such a thing, not even as a joke.
FBI tips included an email address belonging to Colt Gray associated with the Discord account in question. IP addresses from around the time that the family was evicted from their house show that the Discord account was used in either Fort Valley or Statesboro, Georgia, and possibly Buffalo, NY.
The user profile name of the Discord account linked to Colt Gray was written in Russian, officials report. Translated to English, the name spells “Lanza,” allegedly referring to Sandy Hook Elementary school shooter Adam Lanza. Colin Gray told officials that his son does not know or speak Russian. Investigators determined that the allegation that Colin Gray or Colt Gray was behind the Discord account could not be substantiated.
